Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound found in certain species of mushrooms, commonly referred to as "magic mushrooms." When ingested, psilocybin is metabolized into psilocin, which interacts with serotonin receptors in the brain, leading to altered perception, mood changes, and sometimes profound spiritual experiences. It has been used for centuries in various cultures for ceremonial, spiritual, and recreational purposes.
The potential benefits of psilocybin include alleviating symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD, enhancing creativity and problem-solving abilities, promoting spiritual experiences, and potentially assisting in overcoming addictive behaviors. However, it's essential to approach its use responsibly and under appropriate supervision.
Ballot Measure 109 (M109) is also known as
the Oregon Psilocybin Services Act. It was
voted into law by Oregonians in November
2020. It is codified in Oregon Revised Statutes
in ORS 475A. M109 directs Oregon Health
Authority (OHA) to license and regulate
psilocybin products and the provision of
psilocybin services.
Oregon is the first state in the U.S. to create a
regulatory framework for psilocybin services.
Psilocybin is a schedule 1 controlled substance under federal law.
